thief. >> reporter: absolutely not, raj. church service begins here at 7:30 tonight. and members tell me even though they now have no guitars and no keyboard, they still have their voices, and they plan to sing. they call it temble la hermosa, the beautiful church. inside something ugly happened -- >> why us? why they want to do it? >> reporter: what someone did was steal all the instruments from the altar. two electric guitars, a keyboard and drum set. church drummer america saldana is devastated. she's wondering what she'll do when members arrive for services. >> maybe cry. because we don't have nothing. no microphones, no guitars, nothing. >> reporter: someone broke this window inside the church, crawled in, and hauled out the instruments, mics and speakers worth more than $2,000. this isn't the first time the church has been burglarized.
5:02 pm
six months ago someone broke in and stole an electric piano and a computer. the church has only 36 members. they donated enough money to replace what was stolen the first time, but now -- >> it's so difficult because we don't have -- we don't have money. >> reporter: no money, no insurance, but plenty of prayers. members here say maybe this crime is a lesson from god. one about forgiveness. >> everybody makes mistakes. >> reporter: well, this church has certainly been through a lot. they did have an alarm system, but two years ago there was a fire here, and that destroyed the security alarm system. and they haven't had any money to buy a new one. police are asking for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious here, likely on monday night, to let them know because they are still investigating this case. reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. and just in to the newsroom

danger. this weekend, as you heard, is going to be really, really hot. the land is dry. so tonight, fire departments that are cash strapped and short staffed are going out warning us to be extra careful. they're going door to door to help neighbors protect their homes from going up in flames. nbc bay area's traci grant is live in san mateo with that part of the story. >> reporter: jessica, since april, cal fire has inspected more than 1,200 homes in the unincorporated areas of san mateo and santa cruz counties. today these fires took us out to show us the preparations that homeowners need to make to decrease the fuel for a fire. the california department of forestry and fire protection might come walking through your back yard any day now. these firefighters are inspecting homes in search of what's known as defensible space. >> they're here to educate people on helping us help them.
5:07 pm
>> reporter: the hot summer weather is drying out the vegetation around your house, turning it into the perfect fuel for flames. cal fire is trying to make sure that homeowners understand that all of the brush, dead trees, and dry leaves within 30 feet of all structures should be removed. an additional 70 feet should have a reduced fuel zone by spacing trees and plants away from each other. that carefully cleared zone is called defensible space. the area that can help firefighter fight to keep your property safe. >> the trees are basically ornament will trees. they're -- the only recommendations may be a little further back from the roof. >> reporter: this house is only a few feet from the one next door so the amount of defensible space available is minimal. captain darin mccauley says the fact that there is just mineral soil here, no dead, high grass or reeds, makes it a firefighter's dream. >> that will make our job immensely -- much better if we
